Here are a few important things you’ll need to do while
planning your move:
60 days before your move-out date:
- Fill out change of address order form
with the post office and IRS.
- Reserve your rental truck or moving company.
- If moving out of state, get your travel arrangements situated. Also,
get your new checking account set up in your new city and order checks
with your new address.
- Transfer any memberships (clubs, churches, etc.) you may have.
- Become familiar with the laws and requirements of your new city in
reference to at-home businesses, professional tests, business licenses,
and any other special laws that might apply to you.
- Before you pack, take a thorough inventory of your belongings just
in case you need to file an insurance claim later. If you can, take
pictures or videotape your belongings. Record all serial numbers of any
electronic equipment.
- If you are transporting pets, get their travel arrangements taken
care of.
- Start using up any food items so there will be less to pack.
7-14 days before your move-out date:
- Inform utility services of your new
address.
- Start arranging help for your move-out day.
- Get a confirmation of your travel reservations.
- Service all your appliances to prepare them for moving.
- Clean all rugs and clothing; then have them prepped for moving. This
may include wrapping.
- If you are moving with infants, start thinking about any special
needs they may have.
- Make sure there are no outstanding checks or automatic debits that
haven't been processed. Then move your funds from your old bank to your
new one. Close old bank accounts.
- Make sure you will be covered through your homeowner's or renter's
policy during your move.
- Be sure to defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
- Provide a friend or relative with your travel route so you may be
reached in case of an emergency.
On your move-out date:
- Double-check all closets, drawers, and
shelves. Make sure the attic and garage are empty.
- Carry all important documents, currency, and jewelry yourself or
send them using registered mail.
- Purchase travelers checks. These are safer than carrying cash and
are great for quick, available funds.
When you arrive at your new home:
- Begin renewing your driver's license,
auto registration, and tags.
- Start looking around for new insurance policies, especially auto
coverage.
- Locate and plan easy routes to the hospitals, police stations,
veterinarian, and fire stations near your home.
